Java is a great language, but 99% of all the games on the Internet are either Flash or Shockwave, with the vast majority being Flash. Honestly, nothing really competes with Flash at the moment: it's easy to use, it has a fully-fledged OOP programming language (ActionScript), and pretty much everybody out there has the Flash player installed in their browser.
