Documentation and The Referral System

By proph3t Apr 11, 2007 · 1 Comment

So currently we are working on a new system and strategy for informing users about the many features we provide here on GameGum.  One thing we've experienced troubles with from the start is keeping users, especially those who don't read the news, up to date with the new features coming out.

Right now we are working on a few things including an all new help page, some question mark icons next to various areas of the site that give helpful explanations, and a generally improved visibility for the less visible features.  Until then, GameGum (and ToonGum) remain largely undocumented, and so I will be explaining a newer and yet less known feature: referrals.

Referrals, or invitations, are an easy (easy) way to gain GumPoints.  For each user you refer, you gain 40 GumPoints.  As of now there are two ways to refer your friends: through email, and by a direct link.  Both methods actually use the same link, but the email form built into the control panels allows you to invite multiple friends at once and with a very nice explanation and greeting message.

In the Control Panel

Easy.  Click "Profile", and then select "Invite".  From there you fill out a simple form, and can even use a helpful Plaxo popup to grab email addresses directly from your email account.  Possibly write a custom greeting, and hit the invite button.

Directly

Referring users directly is also incredibly easy and requires only linking them using your username.  Your link must look like this:

http://www.gamegum.com/invitedby/your_username_here/

Just replace yourusernamehere with the username link that is used to link to your profile.  Now, this is a bit much to ask as most users don't want to have to go to their profile, copy their name, and add it to that link.  Very shortly we will be adding, directly above the invite form in your control panel as well as in a reminder elsewhere a premade link just for you.

Well, this has been short but hopefully helpful.  I will be posting back soon with some updates on the new documentation and referring tweaks.
